Not familiar to most New Zealanders, barberry is famed in Iran for its high levels of Vitamin C and tart flavour. Wild red barberries, or “Zereshk” as Persians call them, are an important ingredient in Iranian cooking. Layer your ice-cream with these exotic berries or simply make jewelled rice by sprinkling them with slivered almonds and pistachios. Add them to your favourite green salad or muesli—they’re very versatile!
This product contains 200 grams of Barberry raisins.
The berries grow in thorny shrubs making them difficult to pick, so they are not widely consumed. The birds, however, feed on the berries and help disperse the seeds through their droppings.
